Policy Reflection
In my ENSTU 300: Critical Thinking and Communication in Environmental Studies course, we developed a policy analysis paper. I chose to focus my paper on the effects of urban sprawl in suburban communities. I was particularly interested in this topic because sprawl is an issue that is not typically recognized and is deeply connected to many physical health and environmental issues that many communities experience. The development of his paper was broken down into four smaller papers and involved historical and scientific background research, along with, policy analysis, stakeholder perspectives, policy options and recommendations. Policy analysis was something that I had never done in an in-depth research paper before. This course allowed me to develop policy research skills and incorporate it into my paper in a clear and comprehensive manner which also helped improve the quality of my writing. I feel successful in completion of this paper because I now have a clear understanding of my topic and the recommendation for the issue at hand is something that is attainable in a real-life setting. I learned that urban sprawl is an issue that is interconnected to many other issues within a community and requires cooperation from all sectors of the community to overcome the challenges that urban sprawl poses.
An in-depth analysis of the consequences of urban sprawl in communities in the United States. The paper provides background on how sprawl increased from the 19th century to now and the negative implications that have come with it. Policy analysis, stakeholders, and recommendations are also discussed and analyzed.
Research on the history and scientific background of urban sprawl as related to emissions. This was the first portion of the final paper prior to revisions. The focus has since then changed from emissions related to sprawl, to the impacts it has on communities as a whole.
Policy analysis of legislation related to reducing urban sprawl and minimizing its effects.
An analysis of stakeholder perspectives directly effect by urban sprawl.
Policy options to address the consequences of urban sprawl and my personal recommendation
